Illegal Quaker Meetings Were Held Here

Queens: Flushing/
Bowne St. between 37th and 38th Ave.

John Bowne allowed Quakers to meet in his house here, even though such meetings were illegal. Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch governor of the New Netherland colony, had Bowne sent to trial in Holland, where he successfully argued for religious freedom. It is said that Bowne's victory set the tone for religious freedom in the new world, leading to the inclusion of religious freedom in the US Constitution 127 years later.
