This Was Tin Pan Alley

Manhattan: Madison Square/
West 28th St. between 5th and 6th Aves.

George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin, and others churned out standards here at what was the center of American popular music from 1885 into the 1930s. The cluster of songwriters and publishers was nicknamed Tin Pan Alley, a phrase adopted as a metonym for the music industry.
