This Was Standard Oil

Manhattan: Financial District/
26 Broadway

Two pieces of the Standard Oil Company were run from this building after the U.S. Government broke the monopoly into 34 pieces in 1911. The larger piece, Standard Oil of New Jersey, changed its name over time from "S.O." to Esso to Exxon. Standard Oil Company of New York was known by its acronym Socony, (eventually to become Socony-Vacuum and then Socony Mobil Oil Company). Exxon and Mobil merged to become ExxonMobil in 1999.
