The Beach Pneumatic Railway Was Here

Manhattan: Civic Center/
Under Broadway near Warren St.

Alfred Ely Beach built a 300-foot pneumatic subway prototype, which ran here for three years. Beach started his project with the support of the Tammany Hall political machine. When the Tweed Ring was exposed and disgraced in 1871, he tried without success to position himself as a victim of Tammany Hall in order to gain public support for the railway.
