The GW Bridge Lost Its Shirt

Othmar Ammann and Cass Gilbert, the engineer and the architect of the George Washington Bridge, intended for the bridge to be clad in granite. As the Great Depression rolled on, that part of their budget was eliminated. The resulting utilitarian look was celebrated by modernists.
