The Metropolitan Life Tower Design Was Revised Twice

The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company revised the design for its signature tower so that it could top out taller than the near-complete Singer building. The tower was surpassed in height just six years later by the Woolworth building. In 1960, Met Life had the tower stripped of most of its ornament for a more modern look.
