The Hearst Tower Was Built Nearly Eighty Years After Its Base

Manhattan: Hell's Kitchen/
300 West 57th St.

William Randolph Hearst built a six-story structure at 300 W. 57th St. to house his communications empire. The low-rise building was designed to be the base of a new skyscraper, but the tower plan was postponed due to the Great Depression. A Norman Foster-designed tower was finally added to the base in 2006.
