This was the Corona Ash Dump, the disposal grounds for ash from coal-burning furnaces described in Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby' as a valley of ashes. The site was cleared by Parks Commissioner Robert Moses in 1930 and later served as the site of New York's two 20th century World's Fairs.
