The Dewey Arch Model Stood Here

Manhattan: Madison Square/
Fifth Avenue between E 23rd and E 24th Sts.

A massive triumphal arch and colonnade were executed here in wood frame, plaster, and lath. The model, celebrating Admiral George Dewey's victory at Manila Bay, was installed to raise funds for a permanent monument. Within a year, both the arch and Dewey's popularity had deteriorated. The permanent version was never built.
