Bristol, England had been bombed heavily by the Luftwaffe early in the Second World War. After unloading cargo in Bristol, American supply ships needed ballast to weigh them down for the journey back. They loaded up with rubble from the bombed out city and dumped it here. Mayor La Guardia had the area named Bristol Basin. Thirty years later, it was rededicated in a ceremony by Bristol-born actor Cary Grant.
