The General Slocum Embarked From Here

Manhattan: Alphabet City/
Third St. and the East River

The passenger ship General Slocum left a slip on this spot with 1,342 parishioners from St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kleindeutschland. The ship never made it to the church's planned picnic on the north shore of Long Island. An on-board fire and a lack of sound life preservers caused New York's largest one-day loss of life until September 11, 2001.
