Fort Washington (later, Fort Knyphausen) Was Here

Manhattan: Washington Heights/
W. 183rd St. and Ft. Washington Ave.

This was the site of Fort Washington, built, along with Fort Lee in New Jersey, to keep the British from navigating north via the Hudson River. The British took the fort on November 16 and renamed it Fort Knyphausen, in honor of the German general (in British service) who captured it.
