Discriminatory hiring practices at Blumstein's department store made it a target of the successful "Buy-Where-You-Can-Work" boycott in 1932. Twenty-six years later, Dr. Martin Luther King survived an assassination attempt here at a book signing event for his "Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story."
