Boxing promoter Tex Rickard opened the third of four arena's to be called Madison Square Garden here in 1925. Although the National Hockey League's New York Americans called the Garden home, Rickard started his own team in 1926. His New York Rangers won three Stanley Cups from 1926 to 1940. MSG management decided, in 1940, not to renew their contract with the NY Americans. In local legend, that snub led to Dutton's Curse (named after the general manager of the Americans) and the Rangers' failure to win a Stanley Cup for 50 years. This Garden closed in 1968.
