Jefferson Lived Here - Site of 1790 Compromise

Manhattan: Financial District/
57 Maiden Lane

On June 20, at Thomas Jefferson's house at 57 Maiden Lane, Madison, Hamilton, and Jefferson met and agreed on a plan that would have the Federal government assume the states' Revolutionary War debt. In exchange for the plan, which most southern states opposed, the seat of government would be moved to a site on the Potomac River. It would move to Philadelphia in the interim.
