Franconi's Hippodrome Was Here

Manhattan: Madison Square/
Northwest corner of Broadway and 23rd St.

A 4,000 seat amphitheater dedicated to the "sports of the Roman circus" stood here from 1853 to 1854. Chariot races, mock gladiator fights, and fights on horseback were staged here. The two-story brick structure was demolished in 1858 to make way for the Fifth Avenue Hotel.
