This Was Kleindeutschland

Manhattan: Alphabet City/
Tompkins Square Park

For about fifty years, the neighborhood around Tompkins Square Park was known as Kleindeutschland (Little Germany). The 1904 General Slocum charter steamboat disaster claimed the lives of 1,021 of the neighborhood's residents--mostly women and children. That devastating blow to the community hastened the decline of the neighborhood as a German enclave. (The map marker is centered on a monument to General Slocum disaster victims.)
