NYU's Brown building was originally the Asch building, its top three floors occupied by the Triangle Waist Company. On March 25 the exits were locked, either to keep the young factory workers at their sewing machines or to keep union organizers out. In less than 15 minutes, a fast-moving fire killed 146 of the women, who either burned or fell to their deaths. The tragedy inspired worker safety laws and was a driving force in organizing workers.
