After the Second World War, Dwight Eisenhower served as president of Columbia University and lived in the university president's house here. He took leave from 1950 to mid 1952 to assume supreme command over forces assembled by the new North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and then ran for President of the United States in 1952.
