This Was Death Avenue

11th Ave. between 33rd and 60th Sts.

Until the West Side Improvement moved the New York Central Railroad's tracks underground between 33rd and 60th Sts., 11th Ave. was nicknamed "Death Avenue." The railroad eventually hired "cowboys" to ride in front of the street-level trains in order to to warn pedestrians.
